Air Jordan VI Retro ‘Olympic’ PREVIEW

It’s almost the Fourth of July here in America AND it’s almost time for the 2012 Olympics in London. What better way to celebrate both than these Olympic inspired Air Jordan VI retros? While not an original colorway for the Jordan VI, this Olympic makeup was hugely popular when it first released as part of Jordan Brand’s Retro+ line in 2000. Vin Baker and Ray Allen, aka “Jesus Shuttlesworth” for all you He Got Game fans, first donned these at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney while winning the gold. Following that victory, Nike released the shoes on a limited basis, around 3,000 pairs, at Niketown’s across the US.

Since then, the Olympic VI has become a “grail” for many ‘heads around the world anxiously awaiting a re-release. Twelve years later, the ‘heads need wait no more as these long-awaited retros are returning this saturday July 7 worldwide. Since their 2000 release, these shoes have held a place in sneakerheads’ hearts with their almost “Carmine Jordan VI” color blocking done up in navy. This time around, Jordan Brand has retained most of the original colorblocking and material selections with the only exception being a slight change in the placement of the colors along the midsole, but this is to be expected from Jordan considering they try to differentiate re-releases from the originals to preserve integrity. While most 2012 Jordan releases have featured god awful materials — excluding the White Cement and Military Blue Jordan IV retros — the Olympic VIs are looking like a bag of money. Rich tumbled leather covers the upper while hits of red on the tongue and lace locks give it that Olympic feel.

These won’t be the only Olympic-inspired Jordan retros to release this year as the Olympic VIIs will be reappearing for the first time a couple years as well as a special Gold Medal Pack of Jordan retros done up in Black/Gold and White/Gold. Do we see a theme here? Let us know in the comments section if you’ll be heading out this Saturday to pick up these retro Jordans.
