Although he sadly passed away in 1988, one of New York City’s finest artists Jean-Michel Basquiat continues to inspire all walks of life, especially those of Reebok designers who under new Creative Director Swizz Beatz have produced numerous sneaker inspired by the work of the great artist. The most recent shoe to be used is this Pump Omni Lite, dubbed the ‘Undiscovered Genius’, taken from Basquiat’s 1983 piece ‘The Undiscovered Genius of the Mississippi Delta’.
Quite frankly, the shoe is beautiful. Previous shoes in the same collection have been just a little too outlandish for me but the simple tonal black upper with the gold hit around the heel is pretty near perfect for me. You may wonder where Jean-Michel comes into the shoe but as you can see in the close-up pictures below, the devil is in the detail with his crown ‘logo’ taking the place of the Pump logo on the tongue alongside his name. The title of the shoe appears in black along the gold heel wrap.
As I mentioned before, the subtleness of this shoe makes it appeal to me a lot more than previous releases which although have featured a lot more of Basquiat’s genius, have just been too much for me to rock. I will most definitely be looking out for these hitting select Reebok retailers soon!
