A rivalry can often be a healthy thing. It makes you raise your game, assess how you can be better and give you that desire and drive to achieve. Throughout time there have been some unbelievable rivalries which have shaped the world today. Of course, the modern day is no different as far as rivalries go; Coca-Cola and Pepsi, Apple and Microsoft, Optimus Prime and Megatron to name but a few. But when it comes to fashion and sportswear, there is one rivalry that’s been fiercer and raged for longer than any other: Adidas and Puma.

For those not familiar with the rivalry, the brands were created by two brothers; Adi Dassler (Adidas) and Rudolph Dassler (Puma). They first started making sports shoes together under the name “Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory”, but during World War II a rift grew between them. Relations worsened, reaching irreconcilable levels and in 1948 the two went their separate ways. Ever since then, Adidas and Puma have been the ultimate rivals. Even employees of the two companies would not speak to each other in the town where both factories were situated. It goes without saying that both brands have created some truly phenomenal clothing and footwear, but from a personal point of view I’ve always been more of an Adidas fan. I’m wearing a pair of Adi’s kicks while I’m writing this. Now I feel this may have been an oversight on my part though, because a collaboration, not a rivalry, has shown me the error of my ways.

Enter the Puma x UNDFTD “Clyde” Canvas collection! The iconic kick gets a 2011 makeover thanks to the creative masterminds at UNDFTD, covering it in canvas and giving it some subtle tweaks, the most notable of which is by pairing both of their logos on the tongue tag. In it’s entirety, the sneaker is fairly plain looking, but it’s for that reason I think it looks so classy. It’s the kind of shoe that you could wear with anything; jeans, shorts, a kilt (if that tickles your fancy), and if it clashes with what you’ve got on, buy another colourway!
