Get The Look: Kanye West as Michael Jackson
Ahhh, Halloween. Once a year we have an opportunity to wear whatever we want and not be criticised. But wait, what costume are you gonna go for this year? Do you go as a cliché horror film monster? Dress up as your favourite era? Disguise yourself as someone who you look up to? Well it was the latter that inspired one Kanye West as he showed up at a party dressed as the King of Pop himself: Michael Jackson. This year’s Halloween may have already passed but I thought I’d throw together a short guide on how you can get the look that ‘Ye went for, just in case you need reference for next year or even if you want to kick it as MJ for a day.
1. THE HAT
Now there’s any number of Michael Jackson replica hat’s on the internet going as little has £3 but would MJ really have skimped on headwear? No. And in order to be the authentic King of Pop, you shouldn’t either.
Made by the classic New York hat makers Worth & Worth (who Michael wore in the past), this Trilby is probably as close as you’re gonna get to the real thing without raiding Neverland. For $235, you too can rock the Thriller look.
2. THE WIG
There’s really not much point in splashing out on this – it’s a curly black wig which will probably be worn once underneath a hat. Type “Michael Jackson wig” into Google and there’s plenty of results. I just chose this one because it looks the most like the one Kanye wore, plus the model’s face makes it looks as though he was watching Zoolander to prepare for his first modelling gig.
3. THE JACKET
The same goes for this in that you could easily buy a £20 replica which is made of plastic but again – MJ wouldn’t of messed around with no fake leather. Which is why you should get a proper quality varsity jacket, like this one by Comme Des Garçons’ designer Junya Watanabe, which I featured this on the site back in August.
It comes in the same (or similar) colours as Jackson wore and minus the chenille M on the breast, is pretty much the same except you could probably get away with wearing it throughout the year without people banging on about “isn’t that the jacket from Thriller?”
From the picture (courtesy of 40oz Van on Twitter), that is all we can see Kanye wearing but if you want to go all out and complete the King of Pop’s look; you probably can’t go far wrong with some black jeans and a trusty pair of his signature LA Gear sneakers.
