As with pretty much any year that’s ever happened, 2011 had its moments, ups and downs. We’ve seen sneakers shut down the internet, a certain gender-ambigous celebrity clad in Supreme and one of the biggest musical breakthroughs in years – but what made the list? Actually, all of the above…and some more. But what is the prize? I hear you cry. Well to be honest, we don’t even know ourselves. Lets just say it’s a surprise package from the heart-warmingly kind Canadians over at 123Klan, but lets get into the nominees:
Nike MAG Release: It’s hard to put into words the impact this had on sneaker culture. From the first preview video to the final auction, people went literally insane. $23,000 insane, according to Tinie Tempah. These are already up for the Best Sneaker award but can you blame us for wanting to commemorate them even more? No, you cannot.
Lady Gaga for Supreme: When Terry Richardson snapped everyone’s favourite he-she rumour for LA streetwear brand Supreme, there seemed to be something of a split in opinion: Were Supreme selling out (again)? Was that a mushroom tip we just saw behind the skateboard? But regardless of your first words, you were more than likely attracted to her in some strange way. The internet seems to be the best way to gauge popularity nowadays and considering almost every Tumblr has at least one of these pics in their archives, I’d say it was a success.
Kanye West and Jay-Z perform Niggas in Paris 9 times at the Staples Centre: When we decided upon these nominees, the record stood at 7 in Chicago, then later in the week that rose to 8 and at the last minute (aka last night), they stepped it up once again to make it 9 times at the Staples Centre in LA. Many claim that Niggas in Paris is the best song on Watch the Throne and it would appear that Kanye and Jay agree. With only a handful of shows left on the tour, will we see the number rise into double figures? More than likely.
Charlie Sheen: I wasn’t sure what exact moment in time to use for this nominee so I will simply state Charlie Sheen as the standout moment. Winning life – losing jobs seemed to be the motto for the ex-Two and a Half Men star as he became the one and only star of his own downfall. From the infamous ‘Winning’ interview to insulting Two and a Half Men producer Chuck Lorre, it was definitely a year to forget for good ole Charlie. At least we were entertained…
Tyler, the Creator dropping Yonkers: Whilst it wasn’t exactly his debut, Tyler’s ‘Yonkers’ video definitely put him on the musical map, and won him an MTV VMA moonman (not quite as prestigious as one of these Ahoodie awards mind you). Whether it was the cockroach eating or the lyrics about killing 3 of teenage girl’s favourite popstars, it was one of the biggest and best musical breakthroughs in a long time. GOLFWANG.
